Parkrose Community Orchard

Group Photo at Parkrose Community OrchardParkrose Community Orchard is our fifth and newest orchard. Located on the property of Parkrose Community United Church of Christ, it is home to about 30 fruit trees, edible shrubs and vines, herbs, and as well many other understory plants, including hundreds of native plants.

Eastminster Community Garden, a Grow Portland site, lies adjacent to the orchard on the same property. The church’s parking lot is landscaped by Friends of Trees. While Project YESS, an environmental group that focuses on underserved youth involvement, was able to double our efforts in merging watershed health and urban agricultural efforts by planting a native hedgerow and additional native plantings throughout the site. These are just a few of the partnerships Parkrose Community United Church of Christ has nurtured in support of strengthening community.

With the support of Alliance for Community Trees, East Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District, and East Portland Action Plan, Parkrose Community Orchard was officially inaugurated in October 2015. Permaculture design students lead by a local PCC Educator, Marisha Auerbach, as well as scores of other committed volunteers contributed to the design. With the help of community leaders and volunteers, a modified version of the design was implementation over the course of the last two years.

While Parkrose Community Orchard is still very young, and not producing much in the way of fruit, it's a great opportunity to get outside, connect with neighbors, and learn a whole lot about not only young fruit tree care, but "Food-Forestry," Pruning, Organic Weed Management, pollinators and so much more.
